4 Common Causes of a Blocked Drain

Have you noticed the following lately? These are some of the tell-tale signs that you have a blocked drain that needs attention:

  • You can hear gurgling or bubbling noises from your sinks and basins around the home
  • You can smell foul stenches coming from your kitchen, bathroom and laundry areas of the home
  • The toilet water doesn’t recede after flushing
  • There is an overflow of wastewater from the external sewer gully
  • Water drains very slowly (or not at all) in household sinks and basins after using taps

In some cases, home plumbing aids such as a plunger, plumbing snake or drain chemicals may resolve your drain issue. If they do, you can sigh in relief. If they don’t, it’s imperative that you call a licensed, professional plumber immediately. Leaving a blocked drain unattended will inevitably end in the problem becoming far worse.

You may wonder how on earth your drains got blocked in the first place. It is something that leaves many householders baffled upon the realisation that they have a drainage issue. Here are some of the most common causes of a blocked drain:

1. Debris build-up

    • . A very common cause of drain blockages is a build-up of debris. Over time, clumps of hair, soap residue and fatty deposits can accumulate and block your pipes.

2. Foreign matter. This includes anything that is not meant to be flushed including children’s toys and an ever-increasing culprit, the wet wipe. Whilst it might be similar in appearance to a tissue, wet wipes actually harden after flushing rather than disintegrate, thereby hindering a pipe’s water flow.

3. Tree roots. It’s still not commonly known that one of the biggest threats to a sewer pipe’s integrity is the invasion of tree roots. When tree roots get thirsty, they will move in search of a water source. The moist exterior of a water pipe is very appealing to tree roots. Relentless in their pursuit of water, they may break through the pipe, thus creating a serious blockage which will at the very least require the use of a high-powered water jetter to remove them.

4. Storm water and heavy rain. Drains will experience a flood of water during a storm or heavy rainfall which they are not really designed for, so they may block up as a result. If gutters have not been cleaned, the rain will also push any leaves etc that gutters hold into the drain also, thereby creating an even greater blockage.

5. Fractured pipes. Pipes can break for a number of reasons, the main reasons being tree root invasion, wear and tear and inferior installation. Naturally, is a pipe is broken, it will be far more susceptible to blockages that pipes that are intact.

6. Poor installation. Whilst DIY methods of home renovations can be cost-effective and acceptable, generally, installing your own sewer pipes is not recommended. Only a professional, licensed plumber knows how to expertly lay a pipe system underground to ensure correct water flow, thus minimising the risk of costly and bothersome blockages.
