How To Completely Stop Drain Flies From Invading Your Drain

Drain flies are small flying insects that hang out and reproduce in drains. They don’t directly cause any harm but a certain amount of caution should be observed. Some of these flies may originate from sewage wastes.

Swatting the adult flies isn’t a definite solution. They most likely have already laid eggs in the drains. Unless of course you get rid of its main breeding ground, then you’re stuck in dealing with adult flies. Before we discuss the tips on how to stop these flies we will first tackle the steps in identifying which drain is the source of the flies.

1. Finding where the flies are coming from

In most cases, the drain where there is a large concentration of these insects is where their main breeding ground is located. Another evidence of their presence is the larvae coming out of the drain opening. If there is an area in your home that has multiple drains (e.g. bathroom) then you need to do more effort in finding their location.

Don’t worry this isn’t an extremely difficult task. All you need is a transparent tape to stick on the opening of the drain. Take note that you must not cover the whole drain hole with tape. You see, the purpose of this is to get evidence that the flies are in the suspected drain.

If you completely enclose the drain hole then the insects will be forced to find another way to get out of the drain line. You don’t want this to happen since it will give you no evidence. It’s recommended to cover at least 3/4 of the drain hole. Leave the tape around 4 to 7 days. The reason why there are scheduled days is because the egg cycle is taken into consideration. You might not find any flies on the first night so you should keep the tape on according to the recommended number of days.

2. Taking out the breeding ground

If you have found where the flies originate then you should get rid of it as soon as possible. You can deal with the adult flies later. Your top priority is to remove the larvae and drain wastes they’re feeding on. Eliminating the eggs and wastes is pretty much the same as unblocking your drains. Here are the steps:

  • Pour boiling water first to slacken the grime, dirt, and larvae.
  • Use a plunger or a drain snake to remove the blockages and debris.
  • Once the obstructions are gone, pour baking soda and vinegar mixture inside the drain hole.
  • Pour boiling water again.
  • You can repeat the whole process if you think the drain needs more cleaning.

3. Dealing with the adult drain flies

Dealing with the adult flies is easy, the problem is that some of them are sneaky and hide behind the sinks. We highly recommend using a fly swatter since it doesn’t make use of chemical solutions. If you prefer bug sprays then make sure the room is well-ventilated. This will ensure that the chemical fumes disperse fast.
