4 Mistakes to Avoid When Unblocking a Toilet

Unblocking a toilet isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s something that must be done. Otherwise, you’ll be left with a stinky and dysfunctional toilet. Some homeowners are not aware they’re doing errors when clearing the blockage. Check out these common mistakes that people do when unblocking a toilet.

  1. Flushing the toilet even though you already know it’s blocked

Some of you may have already experienced this scenario: you flush the toilet once and the wastes don’t go down, but instead it rises up. You decide to flush it again hoping it will finally go down…but it didn’t.  You should never flush the toilet if you noticed it has already been blocked. Forcing a flush will only cause an overflow and leave you panicking.

If you’re done plunging and want to try flushing be prepared. Place a lot of newspaper under the toilet and keep your distance. You need to do this in any case the overflow will happen again. Keep the window open so that the foul odour won’t stay in the bathroom.

  1. You’re not using the right type of plunger

There’s always a common misconception that any type of plunger can be used for any drain work. Actually, there are two basic types of plunger and each one is strictly designed for a specific purpose. There is the cup plunger (standard/sink types) that has a flat rubber surface. This plunger is intended for unblocking sinks and drains that have flat levels. The other type is the flange plunger which has a curved design and used for unblocking toilets.

Using a cup plunger on a toilet is inefficient and a complete waste of time. It’s because the toilet drain has an extremely curved surface which makes it nearly impossible to create suction with the cup plunger’s flat rubber. Always have a flange and a cup plunger ready for any drain blockages in your house. There are dual plungers that can be used for both flat drains and toilets. These plungers have a foldable rubber flap that’s intended for unblocking toilets. If the flap is folded, the plunger is turned into a standard cup plunger.

  1. Using chemicals that offer no help in removing the obstructions

Stores are riddled with drain-cleaning products that offer little to no help with regards to unblocking a toilet. Some of these products actually do more harm than good. Certain chemical cleaners eat away the pipe linings and even expel substances that harm your health. Acidic chemical solutions aren’t effective in dealing with solid and heavy blockages in the toilet.

  1. Not knowing when to give up and just let a plumbing professional do the job

If you’ve already done all you can to remove the blockages and the toilet still remains blocked  —  then you really need to call in the pros. Forcing yourself in fixing this problems will only make it worse. It’s clear the problem is something deep within the pipes or some complex issue inside the sewer system.
