How to Prevent Your Water Heater From Exploding

Did you know? Your water heater can become a ticking time bomb due to a few factors? Gas leaks from a water heater gas line can turn into a catalyst for a destructive water heater explosion. Another possibility of a water heater explosion can also be from pressure build-up. Sometimes the temperature and relief valve will stop working. This causes the valve not to release any water if the tank is building up temperature and water volume. Follow the tips below to prevent your water heater from exploding to tiny bits.

Always check if your T&P valve is functioning or not

As what was written in the previous paragraph; a T&P (temperature and pressure) valve, discharges water if ever the tank isn’t able to keep up with high water volume, pressure, and temperature. If the valve ever stops working then there is no way for the heating system to release the build-up. The temperature and pressure will just keep on increasing until the water heater explodes. This is why you must test your T&P valve on a regular basis. The tests won’t last long and it’s easy to do. Locate the lever near the valve and then flip it. Release the lever and let it return back to its original position. Once the lever goes back to its place then it should be able to release water if it’s working. If you noticed that it’s not working then the valve needs to be replaced. Another important thing that you should know is that you need to replace the T&P valve after every three years regardless of its condition.

Keep the thermostat at optimum temperature

You should be careful not to set the temperature too high or too low. If the temperature is too high then it will damage the tank as well as the other components of the system. The risks of explosion also become higher if the temperature is constantly set at high. Setting the temperature too low can also encourage the production of dangerous pathogens — particularly legionella bacteria. The optimum settings for the water heater would be a range of 322K to 327K.

Get the water heater optimised every year

This is also called a tune-up. It’s basically having a licensed plumber check out your water heater for gas leaks. Aside from that, the plumber will also ensure the safety features of the water heater are still working. You should have this inspection at least once a year. Some of you may think that you can easily do the inspection yourself but there may be some problems that you can miss. Save yourself the effort and risks and let the pros do the job.

Place an expansion tank on the water heater

The expansion on the tank serves as an outlet for the increased pressure and water volume. Installing this device can help prevent your water heater from exploding and save the components from being exposed to high temperature.
