How is pipe relining performed?

As the name ‘pipe relining’ suggests, the affected sewer pipe is relined, rather than replaced. A fibreglass or cloth liner that has been saturated in an adherent resin will be inserted into the damaged pipe. This in effect creates a pipe within a pipe, thus removing the need for total pipe replacement. Pipe relining is suitable for a wide range of sewer pipes, including those made from PVC, earthenware and cast iron. Pipes from as small as 40mm in length to as large as 600mm in length can be relined successfully.

Let’s look at the steps our plumbers take as part of the pipe relining process to give you a better understanding of how it works:

  • A partial clean of the affected pipe. The plumber’s first step is to give the damaged pipe a partial clean with one of Dr Drip’s high-pressure water jetters. This step is carried out to ensure the pipe is clean enough for an internal video inspection.
  • Internal video inspection of the damaged pipe.Next, an internal inspection of the pipe is performed via a CCTV sewer camera. This is so the plumbers can determine the exact location of the damage to the pipe, as well as the severity of it. Once the footage is available, the client is invited to view it. We find this can help the client confidently reach a decision as to whether or not they want to proceed with the pipe relining process which is important when opting for a process that may be unfamiliar.
  • A thorough clean of the damaged pipe is performedIf all are in agreement that pipe relining is suitable for the job at hand, then a more thorough clean of the affected pipe will be carried out to ensure it is ready to be relined. This step is once again performed with the high-pressure water jetter.
  • The installation of the lining. After the affected or ‘host’ pipe has been thoroughly cleaned, the plumber will insert the resin-soaked liner into it. Once the liner is inside, the plumber will then use an inflating device to precisely fit the liner to the diameter of the host pipe.
  • The liner is left to dry.Once the liner is neatly in place, it will be left to dry, or ‘cure’. Curing time is typically around 2 hours or so. Steam may be added at this stage if the pipe that’s been relined is a larger pipe, in the interest of accelerating the drying time.
  • Quality control. Finally, another CCTV video inspection is performed to ensure that the pipe relining job has been completed successfully.

We trust that this has given you a much clearer understanding of how the revolutionary method of pipe rehabilitation that is pipe relining is carried out. Pipe relining is a revolutionary method of pipe repair that is fast, clean, practical and cost-effective and one that an increasing number of homeowners all of the country are choosing for their pipe repair needs.
