The Basics of a Pipe Relining Procedure

Many trenchless repair solutions have developed over the years. Today, you can have your sewer pipes repaired without worrying about full-on excavations. Most modern pipe restoration solutions can be finished quickly while creating little property damage as much as possible. Pipe relining is a trenchless pipe repair technology which is commonly used nowadays. We’re going to take a look at the major steps of a pipe relining procedure.

Evaluating the condition of the pipes

In any sewer pipe repair, it’s important that plumbers know the condition of the pipeline they’re repairing. This is technically the first step of every pipe repair ever. They will decide the best trenchless repair technology to use after checking the pipes. You see, the pipes can be either rehabilitated or relined — depending on the status of the pipeline. After evaluating, the contractor will then use whatever method they deem suitable. For a pipe rehabilitation; the popular methods of cured-in-place-pipe or pipe relining. Plumbers use a pipe camera to see the pipe lining. Aside from the condition of the pipeline, they will also check if there are clogs that are forming in the pipes.

Removing the found obstructions

Blockages that are inside the pipes must be taken out so that the plumbers will be able to insert the pipe liner. Handy tools like water jets, augers, tests liners, and excavations tools are used to clear out a blocked sewer pipe. Augers that have rotating blades are perfect for cutting sewer lines that have plant roots. Water jets are effective in removing stubborn blockages. Plumbers use excavation tools for pipes that are already broken and collapsed.

Excavating a pipe section to serve as an access point

The next step is to create an access point for the pipes to enter. The entire size of the pipe will depend on how large the host pipe is. Another factor would be the soil conditions and geography. Contractors will already know where the best spot to excavate since they already inspected and mapped out the pipe inspection earlier with the use of the pipe camera. Two holes are needed for the access points. One of the access points is where the pipe liner is inserted while the other one is where the winch machine will be able to pull in the pipes.

Integrating the liner

In most relining procedures, polyethylene pipes are used for insertion. Generally, the pipe liner can be pushed or pulled into the pipes. In certain cases, using both the push and pull method is applied. The insertion technique will depend on what type of polyethylene pipe is used. Contractors can push or pull pre-fused pipes. Gasket-joined pipes can only be installed via the push method to make sure the pipe is perfectly sealed. The pipe liner is left for a few hours to let the liner integrate in the new pipeline. Checking and finalising the connections is done once the new lining has set.
