3 Common Water Softener Issues and How to Solve Them

A water softener is a device that converts hard water into soft water. Some of you may be curious on why you need to go all the trouble to install a device that eliminates hard water. You see, there are certain problems that hard water can cause. One of which is the faster degradation of certain plumbing fixtures – especially the water heater. The excessive minerals from hard water can cause mineral deposits on plumbing connections and cause blockages in the long run. Other minor inconveniences caused by hard water are water stains on surfaces, rougher clothes texture, etc. This pretty much covers the reasons why hard water is detrimental to your home.

Installing a water softener can solve your hard water problem. However, keep in mind that water softeners can have complications as well, since it’s just like any other device that becomes prone to damage as it ages.

Here are the common water softener issues and how to solve them:

  1. The resin bead malfunctions

First of all, resin beads can only be found on water softeners that operate using salt. Don’t bother looking for resin beads if you’re not using salt water softeners. The main problem with a broken resin bead is the need for the water softener to recharge most of the time. You will be able to determine if the resin bead is broken when you can find particles in the water. The debris from the resin beads can be carried by the softened water, which causes the appearance of debris and particles in the water. Replacing the broken resin beads is usually the solution for this problem.

  1. Obstructions on the brine area and filter screen

Blockages are very common on devices that have tubes and pathways. Water softener is no exception from this problem. The cause of obstructions in the sewer line is the minerals from the hard water and the salt the device uses for converting hard water. The mineral and salt deposits mostly stick on the filter screen and brine area. Cleaning the filter screen and brine at least once a month can help avert blockage problems. Keep in mind that each water softener is different and each one requires different cleaning regimen or methods. Refer to the manual of your water softener for the instructions on how to properly clean and maintain your softening system.

  1. Salt bridges

Salt is prevalent in water softeners since it’s used to replace the mineral content of the hard water. Due to the great amount of salt in the softener’s tank; salt bridges are often a common occurrence. Salt bridges are salt formation that accumulates at the bottom of the tank. Salt bridges that are in the tank for too long will cause problems in the long run such as slower regeneration cycles and less water will come out of the softening system. Clearing the salt bridges is easy; just get a broom handle, reach where the build-up is happening, and just smack the salt until it breaks. Take note that you still need to thoroughly clean the tank to remove all the excess salt.
