3 Main Causes of Sump Pump Failure

Sump pumps have become a common plumbing device in many households. This equipment is very useful in preventing floods in the basement. Even houses that aren’t located in flood-prone areas are encouraged to have a sump pump. This is because it’s still a form of safety if ever a flood occurs. In addition, rainwater isn’t the only cause of basement flooding. Pipe bursts and sewer blockages are also well-known culprits.

It’s a reality that sump pumps are not perfect machines. They are still subjected to limits and can malfunction during inappropriate times. We compiled a list of the most common causes of why a sump pump stops working. Of course, we also added tips on how you can prevent these problems from pestering your sump pump.

  1. Problems with the float switch

The float switch basically starts up the sump pump. If the water reaches a certain level it will prompt the float switch to start the motor. In any case the float switch gets jammed or stops working then your basement is going to be in deep trouble. Without the float switch the motor won’t even start running. In other words, the sump pump won’t be able to function — leaving your basement at the mercy of floods.

In order to stop this disaster from happening you need to check your float switch regularly. You can do one simple tests to check if the float switch is properly functioning. Pour a gallon or any volume of water that will able to force the float switch to trigger and cause the motors to start. Have the float switch and sump pump checked if the device doesn’t work after conducting the test.

  1. Electric/power outage

It’s a no-brainer the sump pump won’t work if there is no electricity. There’s a chance a strong rain showers occur it will be accompanied by an power outage. Having no power is bad news for your sump pump and basement

Don’t worry though…there are devices that can keep your sump pump functional even without power. You have the option to install a battery backup or a generator. This equipment will serve as a power backup to keep the sump pump working in case a power outage occurs.

  1. Sump pump was not properly installed

Another reason why a sump pump isn’t working well is because it’s not even properly installed. While there are DIY methods that you can serve as a guide in installing your sump pump it’s highly recommended to have a professional do it. Plumbers have the expertise to correctly install the sump pump. Not to mention they can identify certain issues that can affect the performance of the device. If you want to be hassle-free and have a proper installation then you should consider hiring professional services to install the sump pump.
