3 Types of Plungers You Should Know Of

Clearing blockages is quite a hassle but it can be often fixed with the use of plumbing tools — particularly the plunger. You may be able to find solutions like commercial drain cleaners but they pale in comparison to old-school plumbing equipment.

It’s important to keep in mind that even though you’re using a plunger it won’t be effective if it’s not the right type you’re using. Some people don’t know that you should use the correct kind of plunger in order to maximise its effectiveness. We’re going to showcase the most common types of plungers. We will also discuss which kind of drain they’re most effective for.

  1. Common/Standard Plunger

The first plunger we’re going to tackle is the sink or standard plunger. When people talk about a plunger, this plunger will be the first thing in your mind. Standard plungers have a rubber cup at its end and have a wood or plastic handle.  As what you might expect from its namesake this plunger is best used for clearing blockages in the sink.

The flat rubber cup makes it easy to create suction within the drain. Of course, you should avoid using this plunger when unblocking a toilet. A sink plungers’ flat rubber will make it too burdensome to actually plunge anything. If you have a standard flat plunger just use it for blocked sink drains.

  1. Toilet Plunger

Well, this plunger is clearly intended for removing obstructions in the toilet. Its design is far more complex and versatile than a standard plunger. First of all, the toilet plunger has a flat rubber cup. However, the additional feature of a toilet plunger is a foldable rubber flap which can be found inside the cup. The flap is unfolded for suctioning the toilet bowl. Essentially, the toilet plunger can be used for both the sink and toilet drain. If you want to use a practical tool for unblocking drains then you should consider using a toilet plunger.

  1. Accordion Plunger

Its unique shape may look baffling but this plunger is actually effective in unblocking toilets. The problem is that a lot of homeowners have trouble in using it. An accordion plungers design and weight can make it difficult to control. But with a certain amount of practice you will be able use this plunger with ease. It’s highly effective in clearing stubborn and deep blockages in the toilet. If you really find it difficult to use this plunger then you can always use the toilet plunger.

How to effectively plunge?

Even if you’re using the right type of plunger, you will still have difficulty in removing the blockages if you don’t know how to plunge effectively. Be sure to have a plunging motion in a linear and vertical position. Also, form a stronger and better seal by slowing pressing the plunger in a downward motion. Add water so that the plunger will submerge easily and make it easier for you to make a seal.
