4 Safety Tips to Prevent Your Basement From Heavy Flooding

Even if you’re not living in a flood-prone area, you still need to be vigilant when it comes to protecting your basement from flooding. Anything could go wrong — especially during days when there are continuous and strong rains.

Follow the tips below to prevent your basement from suffering from a heavy flooding:

  1. Sump Pump — your first defence against flooding

As a homeowner, you should already know the importance of having a sump pump and why it should be functional all the time. For the uninitiated; a sump pump is a device that collects the overabundance of water in the basement. The collected water enters the sump pump and goes through a series of pipe systems until it reaches the discharge pipe where it will be dispersed. Keeping the sump pump operational is also crucial; otherwise it’s completely pointless having a sump pump that won’t work.

Sump pumps have different components that are incredibly important for the device’s performance. For example: the float switch is basically the trigger that starts the motor. If the switch is tangled or just broken the sump pump won’t even start gathering the excess water. The pump should also be free from blockage otherwise the water won’t be filtered out. You could also hire professional services to have your sump pump checked if you’re not familiar with maintaining the parts yet. Consider having a battery backup for your sump pump. This can greatly help in keeping your sump pump running if ever there is no electricity.

  1. Get your pipes inspected occasionally

Sometimes flooding doesn’t come from heavy downpours, but from the house itself. Pipes that are old or frozen can burst and submerge your basement deep in water. Your basement pipes are vulnerable to freezing and damage, so make sure you have a plumber to check them out on occasion. While you’re at it, have them evaluate the other pipes in your household.

  1. Keep sewer lines and septic systems block-free and clean

One of the reasons why flooding can occur at a fast rate in your basement is because of heavy blocking in the sewer and septic system. The obstructions in the sewer and septic line can cause the rain water to easily overflow and flood the basement. Aside from the flooding problem, the excess water coming out from the sewer and septic system can carry sewage wastes and dangerous pathogens that can harm you. If you suspect there are sewer wastes brought by the rain water then you should not plunge yourself into the flood due to the risk of diseases.

  1. Check the foundation for cracks

There are situations in which the water seeps through the cracks in the foundation and cause flooding. This is actually a big problem since a foundation that is constantly soaked with water becomes weaker over time and can threaten the structure of your house. Have the foundation checked by a professional at least once a year for cracks and other types of damage.
