5 Foolproof Countermeasures for Leaky Pipes

Plumbing emergencies are mostly caused by damaged plumbing components such as leaky pipes. A leaky pipe may seem a minor inconvenience but this can actually spiral into an out-of-control complication if not fixed or replaced immediately. The water damage brought by leaky pipes ranges from tiny droplets making puddles up to a burdensome flooding in your home.

Nevertheless, no matter how relatively negligible or severe the leaks in your pipes are, there is a multitude of ways you can restore your piping system back to its optimum condition. Know about the foolproof countermeasures for leaky pipes below.

1. Tighten the joints

A leak may not just occur due to leaks and cracks present in your pipe. Sometimes, loose joints are the culprits of such inconvenience. Try to check whether your pipe fittings and joints are not properly tightened during their installation or repair. Use a wrench to adjust and tighten the joints of your leaky pipe.

2. Hose Clamp

One of the reliable DIY solutions you can do to save your leaky pipes is to buy a rubber patch in the nearest hardware store. Through the aid of your automotive clamp, wrap the rubber and position it properly using a c-clamp. Make sure to wrap the rubber on top of the leaky part tightly. Tighten the clamp around the rubber as well and screw on the tightening mechanism. Observe the proper alignment of the rubber and clamp and make sure to fasten them directly on top of the leak.

Using a hose clamp can provide a temporary pipe fix that can span for a few years. But of course, there will be a need for pipe replacement after some time to promote plumbing health and optimum access.

3. Tape

For small cracks and pinholes, taping the pipe would provide a sufficient seal. Trace the leaky areas first. You can easily do this while there is still water flowing within the pipe. After you spotted the leaky parts, turn off the shutoff valve to stop the water flow. Using a rag, dry off the pipe and then start taping the pipe using an electrical tape. To ensure that the tape does not easily peel off and that there is sufficient coverage, cover at least six inches on either side of the pipe.

Taping the pipe only provides a temporary solution so after having applied this and successfully sealed the leaks; find another long-lasting solution for your pipes.

4. Epoxy paste

In case that the leak is situated somewhere in the fittings, clamping the pipe using an electrical tape and c-clamp might not just be enough to provide a resilient seal. You will have to use an epoxy paste. Of course, before making any pipe repairs, you have to turn off the shutoff valve to inhibit the water flowing in your pipes. Afterwards, dry the body of your pipe using a rage. Squeeze out some epoxy and flatten it using the palm of your hands before you apply it to the leaky area. It should easily adhere to the metal or plastic surface of your pipe. Using a putty knife or just your thumb, pack the paste into the space between the pipe and the fitting. A 20-25 minute window should be allowed in order for the epoxy to harden and settle in.

5. Compound stick

You can purchase a compound stick in your local hardware stores. Simply swab its tip to the leak or crack of your pipe. Activate the shut off valve in case the leak is large enough to allow water to gush out and soak the pipe, as well as its surrounding area completely.
