5 Steps on What to do if a Pipe Bursts in Your Home

Pipe bursts happen because the pipe itself is weakened or the pipeline gives in due to freezing. There are proven and tested methods to prevent a pipe burst from happening. One of which is through having a frequent pipe inspection to find any pipes that are weakening or have the potential to break. The other method is to insulate the pipes during cold weather to prevent if from freezing. However, there’s still a possibility that a pipe bursts will happen despite such preparations. Follow the steps below if ever you have to deal with a burst pipe on your own.

  1. Contain the water to avoid the damage

Not all pipe bursts have the same amount or type of leak. Some will have just minor leakage or droplets while others have bursts that are continuous and powerful. Either way, you need to get a large container so that the water won’t be flowing all over your house.

  1. Find the main water valve and close it

Now that there is a container that can help prevent the water from flooding you must then immediately go to where the main water valve is located, once you found the water valve, you must shut it off immediately. The reason why you’re doing this in the first place is to stop the local water supply from entering your household plumbing. If you’re not able to turn off the main valve then the water coming out of the pipes will never end since the water incoming to your home is continuous. Make sure that every member in your household knows the location of the valve and knows how to shut it off.

  1. Call emergency plumbing services after closing the valve

Be sure to contact plumbing services that are nearest to your home. This is because they will have the fastest response time. Considering the factor of traffic the closest plumbing services will be your best option if you want plumbers to repair your pipes as soon as possible.

  1. Do some temporary fixes if you can

There will still be water in the pipeline even if the main water valve is already closed. This means that the busted pipe may still have water leaking all over the place. You can apply some temporary solutions.

There are many methods you can use to close the damaged pipeline while waiting for plumbing services. You can use epoxy clay for small holes or pipe clamps for bigger voids in the pipes. Be sure to apply the epoxy while it’s still soft in order to avoid the material from hardening before it’s placed onto the pipes. Hardened epoxy will be impossible to shape and apply on the pipe lining.

  1. What to do after the bursts

Call your insurance if such damages are covered. As always, make sure to get photographic evidence to support your claims. You should also get professional dry cleaning services if there is a significant water volume that has spread throughout your home.
