5 Sump Pump Maintenance Tips You Should Know

A sump pump is a plumbing tool that can help prevent basement floods from happening. It can also help subside water faster and make the basement dry quicker. In order to have the sump pump perform at optimum levels you must maintain it. Some homeowners are not familiar with maintaining this plumbing device. Hopefully, the tips below will help you in doing the appropriate upkeep for your sump pump.

  1. Check the pump occasionally if it’s in an upright position

Sometimes there are oscillations during the pumping process, which cause the pump itself to fall over. If the pump isn’t in an upright position then it will be difficult for water to be drained. In fact, the sump pump may not even start due to the jammed float switch. Frequently check the pump for its position especially after a major downpour.

  1. Clean the pump and remove any obstruction

There is a tendency for the sump pump to suck in stones and other form of debris. This can cause a problem since the accumulated debris will certainly cause blockage on the pathway for the pipe.  Remove the submersible pump to check for blockages. Common obstructions found in the pump include rocks, mud, and other debris. While you’re at it, clean the pump as well.

  1. Make sure there is nothing blocking the discharge pipe

The discharge pipe is where the excess liquids will be dispersed. It’s integral to keep this part free from obstructions as well, otherwise, the flood water won’t be able to expunge and will just remain stuck up — causing the flood to still happen.

  1. Check if the float switch is working

Before you test out the float switch please make sure the device is plugged in. Furthermore, the electric cords should not be tangled and doesn’t have any damage. If everything is set then the next step is pour a full bucket of water or any amount that will jumpstart the sump pump. The motor should be running after you have poured the water. If the engine didn’t start then the float switch could be just stuck or damaged. Either way, you need to have it fixed as soon as you can. Don’t wait for heavy rains to flood your basement before starting the repair.

  1. Always have a power backup

One important fact you need to know about sump pumps is that these devices run on electricity. You should be aware that if there is a power outage then your sump pump wouldn’t be able to work and drain water. If ever a strong rain shower occurs and it’s paired with a brownout, then your basement is vulnerable to flooding. Fortunately, you can keep your sump pump working even without electricity; you just need to have a generator or battery backup. Don’t forget to check the battery of your sump pump is still functional. It’s always a good idea to install an extra sump in case the first one fails.
