5 Temporary Fixes for Broken Pipes

A major busted pipe left for a few minutes can cause a watery havoc to your home. You must plan ahead for this kind of plumbing emergency since it still has the possibility of happening. Just remember that when a burst pipe happens you must first get the largest container you can find preferably something that will be able to hold lots of water. Afterwards, rush to the location where the main water valve is and turn it off. Call emergency plumbing services if you’re done turning off the valve.

Even if the main water shutoff is already closed there will still be water flowing out of the pipes. While waiting for the plumber to come by your house, you can do some makeshift fixes to reduce the water flow of the busted pipe. Learn more about these temporary solutions below.

  1. Pipe Wraps

These aren’t your typical wraps since these ones are used for leaky pipe patches. The wraps will solidify after applied to a broken pipe. What makes this a great temporary fix for burst pipes is that it’s very versatile; it can be used for any leak and any type of crack.

  1. Epoxy Clay

The epoxy solution is basically the same with pipe wraps since this clay hardens after placed onto the broken pipe. You do need to apply the clay as fast as you can because it will be too difficult to mould once it hardens. Epoxy clay application can be used for a lot of pipe materials but its best applied for pipes made of cast iron.

  1. Pipe Clamps

Clamps are very useful for sealing large cracks on pipes. On the plus side, it’s sturdy and very dependable. You’ll be assured that water won’t be bursting out of the broken pipe. Even though it’s a reliable fix, do remember that this is a temporary solution. You should not leave your pipes with the clamps thinking it’s already repaired. The pipes still need to be refurbished by a plumbing professional.

  1. Repair Sleeves

Just think of repair sleeves as another sort of pipe clamp. The only key difference between the two is that repair sleeves are for smaller for pinhole cracks. Repair sleeves are good temporary repair for your pipes. Don’t depend on it for too long since the sleeves’ strength is very limited.

  1. Rubber pipe connectors

Applicable for pipe cracks that is located in the middle portion or at the joint. The rubber contractors are applied by wrapping around the broken pipe. This material does require a bit of cutting which can be a bit time-consuming. Pre-cutting the rubber might seem like a good idea but keep in mind that you won’t know the size of the pipe crack until it happens.

How do I keep this problem from happening in the first place?

Pipe bursts happen due to the pipe’s structure being too weak from being frozen or aging. Insulating the pipes with insulation blankets, heating cable, or any other effective insulation material to avoid freezing. Checking the pipe’s condition frequently is also good practise in preventing pipe bursts.
