5 Tips to Prevent Your Basement From Flooding

You’re in for an extensive cleaning if your basement has flooding. It’s very frustrating if you spent a lot of money to turn your basement into a luxurious living space and then a flood just destroys it. You should avoid accentuating your basement due to the possibility of flooding. Even if you don’t have anything expensive placed in your basement, you still need to clean and dehumidify it to avoid mould growth. Leaving moulds can be a problem since the fungi can release toxic spores. Fortunately, you can avoid dealing with basement floods. Just follow the tips in this article.

  1. Install a sump pump or be sure it’s operational if you already have one

The sump pump is a primary defence against basement floods. You should have one installed in your house regardless if your basement is prone to floods or not. The sump pump absorbs the flood water and then discharges it outside your house. This makes it handy equipment in averting floods from happening. If you do already have a sump pump, you still need to inspect it if the device is still operational.  Check the float switch by pouring a bucket of water into the pump, the motor should be running if the float switch works.  Another thing you should do is remove any debris or build-up in the pump.  A major blockage can hinder the sump pump from absorbing the water so be sure to check it out.

  1. Add a generator to your sump pump

Install a generator to ensure your sump pump is still working during a power outage. There are instances in which heavy rain is accompanied with thunder strikes or strong winds — which can damage electric outposts and cut off the electricity supply.  The sump pump won’t be able to function without any electricity, which can leave your basement exposed to flooding.  Another alternative from a generator is a battery backup.

  1. Gutters should not have any debris

Don’t just focus on the indoors but the outdoors as well. Your basement is more vulnerable to floods if the gutter isn’t free-flowing. Ensure there isn’t debris that can cause blockages on it like leaves and rocks.  Aside from the gutter, you should also check the downspouts. It’s optimal for downspouts to be at least 60 centimetres away from the foundation.

  1. Check for cracks in the foundation

You should always check the foundation for possible cracks. These cracks and holes can become the entry point of water — especially during a heavy downpour. Besides, leaving cracks on the foundation can lower the stability of your house’s structure. Use a masonry or concrete sealer as a temporary fix.  However, you should call in a professional to do an intensive inspection of the foundation.

  1. Get insurance for added safety

Most home insurance don’t add coverage for basement flood. You might consider having one in case your basement has a flood. Sometimes flooding occurs despite all your preparations. It’s best if you had insurance to cover the damages inflicted by the flooded waters.
