What Steps to Take if a Pipe Bursts Happens

A pipe bursts occur due to pipes being frozen or weakened. You need to take some precautions in order to avoid this problem from happening again. It’s also a smart idea to know what to do in case this type of plumbing emergency occurs in your home. Below, you will find the necessary steps to take if ever a pipe bursts.

Step 1: Turn off the electrical source of the area affected by the flood

Going around a wet floor while electrical devices are plugged in will only invite electrical shock accidents. Before you do anything to stop the flooding caused by the pipe bursts, you must first switch off the electrical power as a form of safety measure.

Step 2: Acquire a container that has enough capacity to take on gallons of water — and place it directly below the leak

The size of the container will depend on the degree of the leak. For large pipe bursts make sure that you have a sizable holder for the water. After you are done placing the container you must proceed immediately to the next instruction.

Step 3: Shut down the main water valve

You don’t need to know which pipe section is damaged in order to stop the water from flowing out of the cracked pipe. Turning off the main water is enough to cut the water supply from entering your home. Water entering to your home from the local water supply is contributing to the water coming out from the leak, so you must stop it.

The main water shutoff valve is usually found in the basement or outside the utility location of your house. It’s imperative to quickly turn off the main valve after placing the container, which is why you need to know the location of the valve. You should also know how to get there through the shortest route available. All of the members in your home should be aware of the valve’s location so that they will be able to stop the water inflow even if you’re not around.

Step 4: Call emergency plumbing services

Now, that the water damage is minimized, it’s the perfect time to call plumbing emergency services to repair the broken pipeline. This is also the suitable time to have the plumber further inspect your house’s plumbing to find any other possible damage. Although it’s preferable if the plumbing inspection is done on an occasional basis so that any possible trouble can be identified — and taken care of immediately.

Step 5: Drain out the water left in the pipes

Even with the valve off, there is still water remaining in the pipeline. You need to drain the water out so that there will be less water staying at the pipes. It’s highly recommended to do this while waiting for the plumber to arrive. In order to drain out the water you need to turn on all the cold water taps in the house. For the hot water tap you need to turn off your hot water system first. You also need to flush every single toilet in your home at least once.
